Rotation
A store only stays useful if what is about to go out of date gets eaten and replaced. Rotation is the product doing the noticing for you: it tells you what to use next, keeps the inventory true when you say you have used something, and queues a replacement so your cover does not drop.
What to use next
Pantry → Use these next lists your items first expired, first out:
- Items past their date come first. A use-by date is a safety instruction, so an item past it is a disposal, and the page says so and offers Log as discarded. A best-before date is about quality, so an item past it is something to use next, or to discard if it is not worth keeping. The two are never given the same wording.
- Then items inside their rotation window, soonest first. By default an item is listed 90 days before a best-before date and 30 days before a use-by date. You can change both, and set different windows for room temperature, chilled and frozen products, under Settings → Rotation windows.
Every row shows the date as it was recorded, at its precision and with where it came from, and one plain sentence saying why the item is there. A date the product estimated says so.
An item that passes its date is flagged, never removed. It is still in your cupboard until you say otherwise.
Logging an item as used
Anyone in the household can log an item, and it takes one tap:
- Log as used on the use-next list, or Log one as used when the lot holds several.
- Log as used beside any item under Pantry → Every item, and beside anything you have just added on the capture screen.
- Log some to enter a count, or to log as discarded instead.
The item leaves the store, or its count goes down, and your cover is recomputed within seconds. The page says Logged as used.
Undo
Mis-taps happen. Under Logged recently on the use-next page, every log from the last 24 hours has an Undo while it can still be undone. Undo puts the item back exactly as it was. If several logs were made against one item, undo the latest first.
Your next order
Pantry → Your next order is the list of what to buy so your cover holds as items are used. Nothing on it is bought until you take it to the shops.
- When an item enters its rotation window, a like-for-like replacement is added, so it is on the list before you have eaten the item.
- When you log an item as used, its replacement is confirmed on the list; if it was used before its window, one is added for what you used.
- You can change any count, remove any line, and add anything from the catalogue by hand.
- When the replacement arrives and you add it to your pantry, the line is marked received.
Items without a catalogue entry cannot be replaced like for like, so they are not added; you can add a similar product by hand.
Cadence, pause and skip
Choose how often you order, every month or every three months, on the order page. It sets the date the order is due by. With no cadence the order has no date and you take it to the shops when you like. Nothing is chosen for you.
Pause stops anything new being added to the order until you resume; what is on it stays, and the use-next list still works. Skip this order moves everything on it to the next one, due one period later. Both are one button, the same as ordering.
What rotation will not do
Buy anything for you. Choosing where to buy an item is a separate step, and it is always yours to review.
